REDFALL: Vampires and Gore

Redfall is a cooperative, story-driven shooter looter FPS experience set in a sleepy Massachusetts town called… well, Redfall

REDFALL

Redfall is an upcoming Xbox Bethesda game, specifically the team that bought us Prey and Dishonoured. Redfall is scheduled to release some time next year. It is set in the sleepy Massachusetts town of Redfall, where a plague of Vampires has taken control of the town, even going as far as to block out the sun. Players must fight their way through different variants of Vampires and Cultists.

The games style is heavily reminiscent of Fortnite, it has the same, almost cartoony, colourful pallet. The characters and scenery are very vibrant with strong hints of Stranger Things with an 80's vibe. As you move through the town you'll creep through all the classic small town landmarks like churches, general stores and movie theatres but the game also offers large open area's for more chaos.

Characters

You and your friends will be able to choose and play as four different characters that have their own personalities, abilities and even their own names. Of course, the game offers a solo experience, so if like us, you don't have any friends than you need not to worry.

  • Layla Ellison: A biomedical engineering student who interned at a research facility, where something went very wrong, leaving her with intense telekinetic abilities.

  • Jacob Boyer: An ex-military sharpshooter turned private contractor. Strange happenings on Redfall have left Jacob with a mysterious vampiric eye and a spectral raven that’s never far from his side.

  • Remi de la Rosa: A brilliant combat engineer who has spent her life on the frontlines. With the help of her robot cohort, Bribón, she’s determined to help rescue Redfall’s survivors.

  • Devinder Crousley: A cryptozoologist and aspiring inventor. Armed with weapons of his own creation, he’s on a mission to prove himself.

Vampires and Cultists

The invading vampires have bolstered their ranks with human cultists whom are dedicated to the cause of the undead and will help them in trying to murder you. These cultists are fully armed and ready to kill in the name of their overlords.

“Our vampires are not some aspirational fantasy. They’re predatory monsters who feed on the vulnerable to make themselves more powerful.”

The vampires will challenge the player in multiple forms. Ranging from sneaky ones that will drag you away from your group to godlike tank ones that cause real chaos in your ranks as your push forward.

Weapons and Skills

No run and gun game would be complete without a sick arsenal of weaponary to boot. Redfall seems to be no exception to this. High-grade military weaponary can be found scattered around the game or players can even build weapons from raw materials they pick up.

loadout options go way beyond the usual shotguns and snipers, although they do feature as well. Players will be able to build cool sounding shit like a Stake Launcher or a UV Beam. All the weapons in the game come with randomised traits - this makes each drop feel like one of an endless potential of combinations.

Weapons aren't the only thing you can use to defend yourself against the children of the night. Real enthusis has been placed on the characters abilities. Above is an image of Jacob's Raven ability that is scouting out the surrounding area for vampires and cultists. There seems to be a really decent amount of skills the players can use and upgrade as they progress through the game.

Final thoughts

It sounds like there is plenty of variation in enemy types, weapons, abilities and ways of upgrading all that lovely loot. We were pleasantly surprised by the level of blood and gore in the reveal trailer and the Vampire death animation is bloody fantastic. We've dropped the trailer at the bottom of this article so you can check it out for yourself.

With Xbox Bethesda at the helm and the talents behind Dishonoured and Prey running the show what could possibly go wrong? Not to mention it will of course be available for 'free' to Xbox and PC Game Pass holders on day 1. Overall we're pretty hyped for this Left 4 Dead clone with Vampires. We can't wait to find out more and hopefully get our hands on some kind of beta soon. Redfall releases some time in 2023.
