Overwatch 2: When can you play?

We've had a flurry of information about Overwatch 2 this week. So what can we look forward to?

Release Date - October 4th 2022.

Overwatch 2 will release on October 4th 2022, but the launch will be into Early Access. This basically means the game isn't completely finished and they don't feel like branding it as a full-game launch is justified.

It's not quite what we expected but rumours suggest that OW2's development has been rocky and problematic with the games Director Jeff Kaplan not only stepping down from his role but leaving Activison Blizzard altogether midway through its production. This is likely the reason for the 'rushed' launch. Get it out, fix it along the way, approach.

Overwatch 2 Beta - June 28th 2022

Overwatch 2 will have a beta on June 28th but it will be closed. This means you will have to opt-in for a chance to access the beta when it starts. Both PC and console players will be able to sign up for the beta. Alternatively, if you pre-order the Overwatch 2: Watchpoint Pack you'll be granted instant access to not only the first beta but any following ones too.

The beta will allow players to play as the new hero Junker Queen, the new maps Circuit Royale, Colosseo, New Queen Street and Midtown as well as the new game mode Push.

Overwatch 2 is switching to the popular model seen across most modern games with seasonal content, new heroes, new maps and a battle pass. Season 1 begins at launch on October 4th. We've also got some details about Season 2.

Final thoughts

Overwatch 2 being Free 2 Play is a win for the players, you won't have to spend a penny to play. It'll be cross-platform and cross-progression too so you'll not only be able to play with friends on different platforms but you'll be able to pick up the sticks on any console or PC and carry your level and unlocks around with you.

It is concerning that its heading to Early Access first but we're sure it'll turn out just fine with Activison Blizzard paying the bills. Overwatch is still one of the most popular games on Twitch and it has a massive eSports scene on YouTube. Hopefully after a few patches and updates it'll be ready to launch in 1.0.
