Open World RPG 'Call of Duty' Game in Production?

Rumours have been circulating that Infinity Ward Poland is working on an unannouced Open World RPG game and it could be a Call of Duty RPG.

Activision and Infinity Ward Poland are creating an unannounced Open World RPG Game according to a job's listing by IW Poland themselves. What could it possibly be? We have some clues and a sprinkle of speculation to cover. First, let's go over what the now deleted job listing says.

The Job Listing

"Activision Publishing is seeking a talented and passionate Narrative Director to ideate, create and direct the implementation of story, dialogues, and scenes for an unannounced AAA project. In this role, you will create a cohesive vision for the narrative presentation, its connection with the gameplay experience, and you will be responsible for direction of cinematic moments.

The ideal candidate will have a proven experience working on non-linear narratives in open world games and directing cinematics in AAA quality titles."

The listing goes on to state the responsibilities the person who gets the role will undertake.

"Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Game Director and team leadership to set the overall vision and direction for an unannounced AAA project.

  • Your role is to provide the best narrative and cinematic experience in an open world RPG.

  • Participate in creation of the game story, characters, lore and world building. "

What does it all mean?

There are three plausible possibilities for what this could be.

  • A brand new IP for Activision, set in a gaming universe we haven't seen yet.

  • It could be cryptic chatter for DMZ. We know that the open world game mode is coming around the time of Modern Warfare II's launch.

  • It's an open world RPG based on the Call of Duty franchise.

Honestly, the third option is the one that excites us the most. Imagining a large-scale open world game with pve and pvp aspects set in the Call of Duty realm. Players could level up and unlock better weapons through looting, exploring, and completing quests. Like Ubisoft's The Division or Destiny 2 but with that crisp Call of Duty gameplay and narrative, and of course Activisions money to back it up.

Infinity Ward Poland first opened in 2017, it is unclear what their purpose has been and what they've been working on. It could be that this game has been in development for several years by this stage. Hiring a Narrative Director this far down the line would make sense as the bulk of the game would need to be built-up first anyway before any form of story line direction is made.

Leaks and rumours suggest a stand alone Call of Duty title is coming out in 2023, further information seems to point towards it being a free-to-play game. It was confirmed that this is not DMZ. DMZ will instead launch alongside Warzone 2.0 as it will utilise the same map.

Final Thoughts

This might be Activision's best kept secret. For a company that is renowned for being as leaky as a sponge they've managed to keep this title completely from public view.

It is important to keep expectations in check. We have no further details on this job listing or what said game is. This is purely speculation, but we'd be more than happy to play an open world RPG Call of Duty game.

The free-to-play title is set to release in the first half of 2023, if rumours are to be believed so news or leaks should start to reach us over the coming months.
