Modern Warfare II: Tarkov-Inspired DMZ will NOT be Free to Play title.

Updated: Aug 3, 2022

We recently reported that rumours suggested DMZ would be free to play and a stand alone title for Call of Duty in 2023. Those rumours appear to be untrue.

Call of Duty insider Tom Henderson has eradicated rumours that DMZ will be a free to play stand-alone title from Activision that will release in 2023. Wires seem to have been crossed and the 2023 F2P title is something else entirely.

Tom, writing for TryHardGuides dispelled a lot of the rumours earlier today, stating that he'd spoken to developers working on the mode and they were frustrated that expectations were growing wildly out of control for the mode and they wanted to reign it back in slightly.

What we do know as a result of this article is that it will be included in the Modern Warfare II game. So, if you want to play DMZ you'll have to fork out the cash. It could become a free to play game further down the road but initially it'll be behind a paywall.

Rumours suggested that DMZ would arrive sometime early next year but it looks as though this intel has been confused with a different project. DMZ will release this year, possibly after the games October 28th launch.

DMZ will share the same map as Warzone 2.0 but will allow an altogether different experience with extraction-based objectives, similar to the insanely popular Escape from Tarkov. With this in mind it would make sense for DMZ to launch along side Warzone 2.0.

DMZ is referred to as just "another mode". Downplaying the idea that it'll be an entire stand-alone game as we previously thought. The studios working on the project hope to build and evolve the project as time goes on whilst it remains live, in a similar way that Warzone has improved and changed in it's life cycle so far.

This news may come as a disappointment to some who were hoping for a fully fleshed out tarkov-inspired game from the titans of the FPS world, but it is still promising and confirms that it is indeed a real thing. We are still excited to see more details and can't wait to get our hands on it later this year.

As for the top secret "Project Nexus" details are still unclear. It could be a stand-alone free-to-play Zombies game from Treyarch. Something fans of the mode have been asking for, for many years.

Call of Duty is entering what it likes to call the next phase of the franchise. Call of Duty 2.0. What that exactly means we don't know but if these rumours and leaks are anything to go by it seems to be a huge expansion into other types of genres. The popularity of traditional 6v6 arena multiplayer seems to be winding down now, with players favouring more exciting games like Battle Royales and more complex games such as Tarkov. It is an exciting time to be a Call of Duty fan.

Modern Warfare II releases on October 28th 2022. More details about the game are expected soon. We're certain that includes information regarding DMZ and Warzone 2.0.
